A Cabin No. 4 story

A couple of years ago, I went on a 3-day hiking trip to the Porcupine Mountains in the UP of Michigan with a dear friend. It was a 4-mile hike in to a remote cabin, and it was the first time we’d ever done something like that on our own. We’d never chopped firewood, never carried everything we needed for 3 days on our backs, and never had to filter our water before.
One morning, we set out for Lake of the Clouds, anticipating about an 8-mile hike for the day. We accidentally went over 2 miles off-course, making us question if we had enough daylight to make it to our destination and back to our cabin again. Ultimately, we decided to go for it – we hiked up and down hills through thick forest, slogged through flooded trails, and climbed over downed trees. The view was totally worth the 13+ miles we put in that day… It wasn’t easy (the real good things rarely are), and we were exhausted but oh so happy. So at peace.
Cabin No. 4 represents THAT place. The place where you take off your boots and stretch your toes after a long day of exploring. Where you start a fire and relax. Where you smell awful, but the air and damp earth smell amazing. Maybe it’s a place where you push yourself to do something new. For me, on that trip, it was Mirror Lake Bunk 4. For you, it’s someplace else… but it probably means the same.
